About Swissland Cheese
Since our inception in 1982,
we have provided a market for the local Amish milk supply.
With the changing times and nature of milk prices it became
apparent that we needed to expand our business. Making our
own cheese was the most logical course to follow.
Kirk used his prior schooling in cheese making and the
assistance of a Master cheese maker from Wisconsin to start
his new venture in cheese. Now days most of the milk we
receive is turned into our own cheese.
Variety and a standard of excellence are our goals. Many of
our cheeses are handmade in the Old World tradition in small
batches. With 32 different types and flavors we've got the
variety covered. Repeat customers and word of mouth speak to
the quality of our products.
All this started when Kirk was a young man working at the
family bottling business in Muncie, IN. He wanted to into
the business with his Grandfather and Uncles however; his
Father suggested he strike out on his own.
At the age of 19, Kirk took over a small creamery in
Eldorado, OH. He learned the business quickly and ran it
well until the opportunity to come to Berne, IN presented
itself. He moved to Berne in 1982 and setup a can dumping,
receiving station for the Amish milk supply. For the last 26
years that has been our primary business.
We're looking forward to expanding our business as we
prepare to move to another location. Still making great
tasting cheese for our customers new and old.
Sincerely,
Kirk & Mary Johnson
